About the ip address converter

Convert an IP address between dotted decimal, decimal, hexadecimal, binary and octal, and expand or compress IPv6 addresses. This IP converter also shows the reverse DNS (PTR) name and tells you what kind of address it is: private, loopback, link-local, carrier-grade NAT, multicast, documentation or public.

Every way to write an IPv4 address

An IPv4 address is a 32-bit number. 192.168.1.10 is also 3232235786 in decimal, 0xC0A8010A in hexadecimal and 11000000.10101000.00000001.00001010 in binary. Browsers and some tools accept these forms, which attackers use to disguise URLs, so being able to convert them matters for security work as well as networking.

IPv6 expanded and compressed

IPv6 addresses can be written in full with eight groups of four digits, or compressed by dropping leading zeros and replacing the longest run of zero groups with a double colon. The tool follows RFC 5952, the canonical form that logs and databases should use, and shows the expanded form that ACLs and some firewalls expect.

What type of address is it?

The tool classifies the address against the reserved ranges: RFC 1918 private ranges, 100.64.0.0/10 shared address space used for carrier-grade NAT, loopback, link-local, multicast, documentation ranges and IPv6 unique local and link-local prefixes. It also produces the in-addr.arpa or ip6.arpa name used for reverse DNS.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an IP address to binary?

Type it in. Each of the four numbers becomes eight binary digits, and the result is shown with dots between the octets.

How do I shorten an IPv6 address?

Paste it in and use the compressed result. Leading zeros are dropped and the longest run of zero groups becomes a double colon.

What is an IPv4-mapped IPv6 address?

An address of the form ::ffff:192.0.2.1 that carries an IPv4 address inside IPv6, used by dual-stack software.

Why does 100.64.x.x not work from the internet?

It is the carrier-grade NAT range. Your provider shares one public address between many customers, so inbound connections cannot reach you.
